In addition to making house calls, he served as an emergency veterinarian and president of Chattanooga's only Emergency Animal Hospital now named The Regional Institute for Veterinary Emergencies & Referrals (RIVER). In 1994, Dr. Bearden and Dr. Mabe purchased Lakeside Veterinary Clinic, now renamed Shallowford Animal Hospital. “I have always felt a special bond with animals. I am doing what I was born to do in caring for God's little creatures; veterinary medicine is and continues to be a very personally satisfying profession."
