In-Clinic Diagnostics

Shallowford Animal Hospital is pleased to offer state-of-the-art blood analyzers in our clinic. Our practice can run a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistries, and electrolytes to determine what issues your pet may be facing. Our doctors obtain the results of your pet’s blood work in a matter of minutes so an accurate diagnosis can be made quickly and treatment can begin for your furry friend. A CBC can give our doctors a great deal of information about your pet, including their number of red blood cells, white blood cells, as well as platelet counts. For example, if your pet has a high number of red cells they may be dehydrated; too few red cells may indicate anemia. An increase in the number of white blood cells can indicate infection, stress or even leukemia. Too few white blood cells can tell our doctors that your pet may have bone marrow issues or inflammation. Finally, platelet counts are important to understand if your pet’s blood will clot properly if surgery is needed.

Blood chemistry analysis help our doctors determine organ functionality of your pet, including their liver, kidney and pancreas. We recommend blood work prior to your pet’s surgery to help insure your pet can manage anesthesia, as well as determine if your pet may have a condition that cannot be seen on the outside.
