Pain Management

Keeping your pet comfortable and their quality of life high is a high priority of Shallowford Animal Hospital. Our doctors are well versed in different types of pain management and also recognizing pain symptoms. Animals have an inherent need to hide pain due to the prey/predator aspect of their lives. Some signs of pain include whimpering, lack of appetite, lethargy and in extreme cases, aggression.

The two main types of pain that the doctors at Shallowford Animal Hospital treat are acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is usually due to surgery, trauma or injury. This type of pain is treated with a higher dose, but shorter term of pain medicine. Chronic pain is commonly attributed to illness, arthritis, joint disorders and even cancers. Chronic pain is treated by using a lower dose but longer term of dosage. Some rehab can be done inside our hospital such as physical therapy or acupuncture. Our doctors have a great interest in orthopedic surgery and have brought relief to many animals through their advanced surgical techniques.
